Passive Fire Protection or sometimes known as Fire Stopping is very wide and varied. Its main aims are to seal any openings, gaps or voids where the possible spread of fire may occur. The main function of Passive Fire Protection is to contain fires within designated fire lines of a building. More importantly Fire Protection slows the spread of fire to allow sufficient time for premises to be evacuated safely. It also reduces any possible damage to the building before the fire brigade arrive. Fire stopping is usually installed at the latter stages of building projects when all mechanical and electrical services have been completed and penetrations are ready for sealing. Fire Stopping is not only required to complete a build within regulations, but it can also save lives.
